Jose made a career change from workshop controller to Salesforce consultant after realising the skills he used every day in spreadsheets and operations could transfer into a high‑growth tech career. Without a technical background and without even knowing what CRM was, he discovered Salesforce and built a completely new future through structured learning, certification, and Supermums Consultancy Skills Course.

Previous Role → Workshop Controller (previously Supply Chain Industry)
New Role → Salesforce Platform Manager → Independent Salesforce Consultant

“The consultancy training helped me think differently. It wasn’t just about configuration. It was about understanding stakeholders, asking the right questions, and seeing the bigger picture. That made a huge difference in how I approached projects and decisions.”

Jose decided to make a career change to Salesforce because…

“I started in Salesforce around four and a half years ago. Before that, I didn’t hear anything about Salesforce or CRM. I’d never used any system like that and I don’t have a technical background.

The reason I came to Salesforce was because my brother found a job with MuleSoft. When Salesforce acquired MuleSoft, he told me, ‘You need to see Trailhead. All the things you’re doing in your actual work is exactly what Salesforce does.’

I was working as a workshop controller, and before that I worked in the supply chain industry. I used a lot of Excel spreadsheets to track the status of cars inside the workshop. I had different tabs—almost like page layouts—to show different salespeople the status of their cars, or to give service advisors visibility.

I had experience managing data without even knowing I was managing data. I was basically using databases in a simple spreadsheet. When I started doing Trailhead and went through the Salesforce Admin training, everything resonated with my current job—even though it was a completely different industry.”

Jose decided to upskill with Supermums because…

“After finishing my Trailhead training, I did the Salesforce Admin certification. I was doing lots of interviews trying to find my dream job.

Someone recommended Supermums to me. They said, ‘They work with different genders, different ages—just apply and get in contact with them.’ So I did.

Supermums found me my first job through their Recruitment Service, and I’m still working there now at Survival International. Later on, I decided to go back to Supermums as a trainee and did the Consultancy Skills course.

That was a really fantastic experience. I learned so much about what a consultant actually does—like the different questions you ask, the real-life scenarios you find when you meet a customer.

Heather provides so much knowledge in that course. It goes beyond the paper course or instruction manuals. It’s about real-life experience—the different scenarios and use cases you actually see. It gave me a 360-degree view of how a CRM should work and so many ideas I could implement back into my own work.”

Jose was able to progress his new Salesforce career successfully because…

“I started as a solo Salesforce Administrator working alongside a big consultancy partner. Over time, we evolved to build everything in-house.

Now I’m the Platform Manager. That means I control everything that has to do with Salesforce inside the organisation. We don’t use subcontractors or partners anymore, so I’m responsible for anything that happens inside the system.

The consultancy training helped me think differently. It wasn’t just about configuration. It was about understanding stakeholders, asking the right questions, and seeing the bigger picture. That made a huge difference in how I approached projects and decisions.

It gave me confidence. I wasn’t just reacting to tickets—I was shaping the roadmap.”

Jose has now successfully achieved a career change to Salesforce Consultant that offers him…

“It’s been nearly five years now working in Salesforce. I started with no technical background and no idea what CRM was.

Now I’m launching myself as an independent consultant.

This career change from workshop controller has given me progression, responsibility, and opportunities I didn’t even know existed before. I went from managing spreadsheets in a workshop to managing an entire Salesforce platform.

It’s completely changed what I thought was possible for me.”

Final Thoughts on going from Salesforce Admin to Consultant

“If you’re using spreadsheets, managing data, solving problems, or organising processes, you already have transferable skills. I didn’t realise that at first.

Doing the Salesforce Admin certification gave me the foundation. Supermums gave me the structure, the real-life consultancy skills, and the confidence.

You don’t need a technical background. You need curiosity, commitment, and the right support.”
