Hellen made a career change from finance into tech after four years out of the workforce, and what started as a part‑time stepping stone role has now become a fully remote Salesforce consultancy career that fits around her family life.

Previous Role: Finance & FinTech Consultant
New Role: Salesforce Consultant (Non-profit Sector)

“I opened a newsletter that had landed in my junk folder—and it completely changed my career path.”

Hellen decided to make a career change from finance because…

“After my second maternity leave, I really felt that I didn’t want to go back to full-time work. It wasn’t viable with the childcare costs, and I really wanted to be around my children more while they were still young.

I’d moved from Sweden to the UK years earlier and built a career in a FinTech company as a consultant, supporting Scandinavian banks. There was a lot of spreadsheet modelling, coding, and customising systems. After my first maternity leave, I moved into the training team and onboarded consultants globally. But after my second break, I just knew full-time corporate life wasn’t right anymore.

I was out of work for about four years. Stepping back in was intimidating. I felt out of the loop. I took a local part-time accounting role as a safe way back into the job market, but I didn’t feel it was my calling. I wanted something part-time or remote, where I could use my transferable skills but also build something future-proof. I didn’t want to just go back—I wanted to move forward.”

Hellen decided to upskill with Supermums because a career change from finance needed structure and support

“I signed up to the Flexible Working People newsletter, and one day I saw an advert from Supermums. It had actually landed in my junk folder. I almost missed it. But the words ‘remote working’ and ‘earn well’ caught my attention.

When I looked into the Supermums Salesforce Admin training, it ticked all my boxes. It felt technical enough to challenge me, but structured enough not to be overwhelming. I saw it as an investment in myself—a way to pivot into tech rather than just search for another job.

I chose the Supermums Salesforce Admin Course because it offered more than just certification. It included mentoring, weekly sessions, and a pro bono project with a charity. That structure made all the difference. We had weekly classes, homework, project work, and a cohort of other women in the same position. You weren’t doing it alone.

I was working part-time while doing the course, and I’d say it took about three to four hours a week. It was manageable, but you do need to be in the right headspace and commit the time. The support—from mentors and from the cohort—gave me the confidence that I could make a career change into tech.”

Hellen was able to launch her new career successfully because she leveraged her transferable skills

“I initially applied for junior Salesforce Admin roles after completing my Salesforce Admin certification. The job market wasn’t easy, and I kept hearing, ‘We need someone with more experience.’ That was probably the hardest part—the self-doubt.

Instead of giving up, I looked for roles where Salesforce was used, even if the title wasn’t ‘Salesforce Admin.’ I found a role as a Database Officer in a charity fundraising team. It wasn’t a pure admin role, but it gave me exposure to Salesforce as an end user—and I was lucky enough to work alongside the admin and take on projects.

My background in finance and consulting helped more than I expected. The analytical skills, troubleshooting mindset, stakeholder communication—those were all transferable. Even the Excel coding gave me confidence with technical concepts.

That role gave me the experience I needed to prove myself. From there, I moved into a Salesforce consultancy that works primarily with non-profits. That’s where I am now.”

Hellen has now successfully achieved a career change from finance that offers her flexibility and purpose

“I’m now working fully remote for a Salesforce consultancy that supports non-profits. It’s the best of both worlds—I’m still connected to the non-profit sector, but I’m working full-time with Salesforce.

The flexibility is everything. I can attend sports days. I can adjust my hours if I need to. If I take time off in the afternoon, I’ll make it up elsewhere. My manager trusts us to do our jobs. That trust and flexibility are more important to me than salary alone.

In terms of earnings, I’m not quite at the same level as I was in the private sector before children—but I’m working in the charity sector by choice. If I’d chosen the private sector, the earning potential in flexible Salesforce jobs is definitely there.

The course cost just over £2,000. It felt like a big investment at the time, but I’ve more than made that money back. More importantly, it gave me a career that fits my life. I don’t think I would have found that anywhere else.”

Final Thoughts from Hellen

“Don’t be scared. But make sure it’s the right time for you. Salesforce Admin training is structured, but it’s a lot of information, especially if technology is new to you. Give yourself the time and space to absorb it.

For me, opening that one newsletter completely changed my path. I went from a four-year career break and a part-time accounting job to a remote Salesforce consultancy role that gives me flexibility, purpose, and confidence.

Looking back, it’s the best thing I could have done for myself.”
