Vicky made a career change from childcare into tech in 2024, taking what she describes as a “drastic decision” to leave the only industry she had ever known and step into the world of Salesforce with zero prior experience.

Previous Role: Childcare Supervisor & Manager
New Role: Junior Salesforce Administrator, Vita Brand (Vita Student Head Office)

“I started with zero Salesforce knowledge and not much technology knowledge either… and now I’m building flows that work. Coming to work with a spring in my step feels amazing.”

“I decided to make a career change from childcare because…”

“I did a career change in 2024. I took a drastic decision to change what I’ve been doing all my life and I went into Salesforce. I’ve been in childcare all my life. I’ve been working with little kids and talking to little children.

A friend of mine was already in Salesforce and she’s the one who shared about it. I did a little bit of research and me and my husband stumbled upon a couple of different companies that provide Salesforce training.

Up until that point, I kept questioning if I’d done the right thing. Am I not too old to be going into something brand new? Is my brain working enough to understand all this complicated information? I was coming from an industry where I was a supervisor and manager, and suddenly I was starting again from zero. But I knew I wanted something different, something with long-term opportunity and flexibility.”

“I decided to upskill with Supermums because…”

“I had a meeting with Lynn and we were really pleased with how everything was communicated and handled, and we decided that Supermums Ultimate Admin Course was probably the right choice for me to start my journey in Salesforce.

I got enrolled in September 2024 with zero Salesforce knowledge and not much technology knowledge either. Even learning how to join a meeting and unmute myself in the beginning was a task. Some of my first questions were how can I share my screen, how can I raise my hand, or send a heart emoji.

At first everything seemed very complicated, as you can imagine for someone who doesn’t know tech. But slowly it started making sense. The more practice I did, the more homework, the mentoring sessions, asking questions, understanding the logic behind Salesforce – it all started to click.

I had my first attempt at the Salesforce Admin certification exam in February and I failed. Failing was probably one of the biggest lessons I could take. I went back, took another month, did lots of notes, used Focus on Force properly, opened the org and found the answers instead of memorising them. The second time in March, I passed way above the passing grade. That was a huge relief and a massive confidence boost.”

“I was able to launch my new career successfully because…”

“After passing my Salesforce Admin certification, I embarked on a journey with an internship project that Supermums connected me with. I worked with an amazing training project manager and helped a small company migrate their Process Builder into Flows.

That was my project over the summer. When I finished, I went on holiday, came back refreshed, and started applying for jobs in September. I specifically looked for junior Salesforce Administrator roles because I knew I wasn’t ready to be a standalone Admin yet.

I was fortunate to get an interview and I was accepted among about 76 applicants. I’m now working at Vita Brand, Vita Student head office, as a Junior Salesforce Administrator.

The interview process was really scary. In childcare I was usually the one interviewing people. Now I was on the other side, going for an interview in something I had only learned for a few months. I tried to show confidence even if inside I was nervous. I think I was able to show them that I was passionate, open to learning, and ready to grow.”

I have now successfully achieved a career change from childcare that offers me…

“I’m now in my fifth month in the role and I’m absolutely loving it. I’m learning as I work. We’ve got a ticketing system and I support internal users who are using Salesforce. It can be admin support they need, or help with improvements.

I help build flows and I’ve built three flows all by myself in the past months. That might sound simple to other people, but for me it’s huge. They work. They send the emails. They do what they’re supposed to do.

Coming to work with a spring in my step feels amazing. I’ve made a successful career change into tech and I’m working in a role that fits my capabilities while still stretching me. I can see how I can grow from here into more senior flexible Salesforce jobs in the future.”

Final Thoughts on a Career Change from Childcare

“The Supermums community has been so supportive. The teachers, my class, my group – I even had someone teaching me how to copy and paste and take screenshots at the beginning.

For somebody who’s completely brand new, having the right community is really important. I started with zero knowledge, failed my first exam, questioned myself, and now I’m working as a Junior Salesforce Administrator building flows and solving problems every day.

If I can do a career change from childcare into tech, starting from scratch, then other people can too. You just need the right structure, the right support, and to keep going.”
