Melanie, from Austin, Texas, after taking a 15 year long career break to raise her children, decided it was time to get back into work now that the children were older. After signing up to an organisation which helps professionals re-enter the workforce, Melanie came across Salesforce as a career option. She tried to learn Salesforce on her own with Trailhead, but needed support, and that’s when she found Supermums. Melanie now works for a women-owned Salesforce Consulting Partner firm based in Colorado, where she works remotely from her home in Texas.

Melanie decided to join the Supermums Admin course because…

‘During my 15 year long career break raising my children, I did a lot of volunteering during that time, and took on a lot of volunteer leadership roles. As my children were getting older, I decided it was time to start getting paid for my skills. So I spent a lot of time doing some soul searching and trying to figure out what it is I wanted to do and how could I use the talents and skills that I had acquired over all this time.  Through my research, I found I-Relaunch, an organisation which helps professionals back into the work place after career breaks, and through I-Relaunch, I discovered Salesforce. In my volunteer work and my career before that, I had always gravitated towards the technical side of things and especially problem solving, so a career in Salesforce seems like a great option for me.

I started off by trying to learn Salesforce on my own through Trailhead. However after a while I realised I needed more than just Trailhead to get me certified in Salesforce, and that’s when I discovered Supermums. Supermums offered accountability where I most needed it – having to  meet deadlines and have someone keep me on track. But it wasn’t just that; Supermums offered moral support from this really powerful cohort of women, who were there so just help each other as much as possible. After taking a career break for 15 years, confidence is a huge element of upskilling into a new career, and the Supermums community are there every step of the way in bolstering your confidence.’

Melanie was able to launch her career in Salesforce because…

‘Completing the Supermums course gave me the confidence to go out there and find a job for myself. Naturally I’m an introverted person, so networking can be challenging at times, but Supermums gave me the confidence to turn up at Salesforce events and job fairs and just promote myself. I decided it was just time to say yes to everything, which is how I found myself at the Salesforce ATX event in Austin, Texas. It was here that I was introduced to a variety of people within the Salesforce eco-system, most importantly, the Consulting Director at The CRM Firm which is the company I work for now, Sarah Burt.

I told Sarah that I had just certified and was looking for a role, and so she put me forward for a role with The CRM Firm. I had an introductory interview, and then a technical assessment, which were both very straightforward thanks to everything I had already learnt with Supermums. They offered me the role and I have been working for them ever since!’.

Melanie’s new Salesforce career and day-to-day role entails…

‘ I am now Salesforce Consultant Associate for the CRM Firm, which is based in Colorado. I work remotely from my home is Texas, which works perfectly for my lifestyle. Day-to-day, I get to create a lot of automations, which I love. I love creating reports, designing page layouts, troubleshooting, meeting with clients, responding to emails and documenting processes. Sometimes I get to do training with clients and requirements gathering as well, which is more on the client side rather than technical side, so it keeps things interesting. My favourite thing about my job is the people I work with. They are just so helpful and generous with their time. Everyone there is a life-long learner, and no one is lording their knowledge over anyone else. I love that, and also being part of a team. The company is very family friendly, and everyone in the company is very focused on work life balance, which is perfect for me. On the whole, deciding to embark on a Salesforce career was the best decision I’ve made since deciding to end my 15 year long career break.’
