After Redundancy and Pregnancy, She Upskilled to Salesforce Administrator – Carolyn’s Story

Carolyn rebuilt her career after redundancy and pregnancy, upskilling to become a Salesforce Administrator and securing a flexible, family-friendly role. While on maternity leave, she retrained with Supermums, transitioned into Salesforce, and is now a Senior Salesforce Administrator at Guinness World Records — working four days a week and progressing her career in tech.

Previous Role: Sales Executive
New Role: Senior Salesforce Administrator, Guinness World Records

“I knew I didn’t want to go back into another sales role. I wanted flexibility, stability, and a career that worked around my family.”

Carolyn decided to rebuild her career after redundancy and pregnancy because…

“I was working in quite a high-pressure sales role with monthly targets and was pregnant with my second child when I was made redundant. Although everything worked out fine with redundancy, it gave me the space to think while I was on maternity leave.

I knew I didn’t want to go back into another sales role. I wanted something more flexible and manageable — a career where I could be there for nursery drop-off and pick-up and have a better balance with family life.”

Carolyn decided to upskill with Supermums because…

“I first came across Supermums through a colleague. Her boyfriend worked in recruitment and said he’d seen lots of people train through this course and go on to do really well, including in terms of salary.

I’d worked with Salesforce before in my role and really liked the user interface. While I was on maternity leave, I decided to retrain and enrolled on the Supermums Salesforce Admin training — literally doing the course with my two-month-old baby next to me.

What I really loved was the cohort. There were lots of people retraining, including other women with small babies, so it felt like a really secure and supportive place to learn.”

Carolyn was able to move after redundancy and pregnancy into a Salesforce Administrator role because…

“I completed the Supermums Salesforce Admin course at the end of 2023. Shortly afterwards, I picked up a small consultancy contract through a colleague — a very small company with a simple Salesforce instance that needed a few tweaks and updates. That was my first real step into the Salesforce ecosystem.

Because that role was contract-based, I started applying for permanent positions. I applied for a lot of jobs on LinkedIn, and that’s where I came across the Salesforce Administrator role at Guinness World Records.

They already had one Salesforce Admin and were looking to hire another as they centralised their IT systems around Salesforce. As someone fairly new to the ecosystem, working alongside another admin and broadening my experience across different Salesforce clouds and products felt like the perfect opportunity.”

Carolyn has now successfully upskilled to Salesforce Administrator

“I joined Guinness World Records as a Salesforce Administrator and quickly got involved in meaningful projects. My first project was setting up Salesforce Cases, which they hadn’t used previously — all the ‘contact us’ forms on the website now flow directly into Salesforce.

Since then, we’ve been configuring CPQ, installing Marketing Cloud, and building out Experience Cloud. At the moment, Experience Cloud is being used for a customer renewal portal, but there’s much more planned.

The role was originally advertised as full-time, but I applied anyway and asked if I could work four days a week. Financially and practically, that made more sense for our family — and they were happy to agree. I now work four days a week, which has made a huge difference.”

Final Thoughts on rebuilding a career

“Supermums has been amazing in helping me get my foot in the door. The training, real-world experience, and confidence it gave me really helped me stand out in a competitive Salesforce job market.

Since joining, the other Salesforce Administrator has left, and I’m now the Senior Salesforce Admin. We’ll also be recruiting my first direct report soon, which feels like a huge milestone for me.

Job hunting — especially on LinkedIn — can feel like a black hole, particularly when you see roles with over 100 applicants. But Supermums really helps you stand out. My advice would always be to apply anyway, even if a role looks full-time. You might be surprised by what’s possible.”
