Caitlin – Learning Marketing Cloud allowed me to start my own consultancy and work on my terms

Caitlin, a mum of two from Maryland, US was previously a Marketing & Communications Director. She wanted a more flexible, part-time role that would allow her to be there for her family more. Learning Marketing Cloud has enabled her to start her own marketing consultancy and work on her own terms around her family, all while upskilling in a niche and in-demand martech product.

Caitlin decided to upskill and launch her Salesforce career because… 

I first heard about Salesforce in 2012. I was working at a non-profit and helped them to integrate Salesforce. I was blown away by all its capabilities compared to old fundraiser platforms and databases. I almost took the Salesforce Administrator exam then but that didn’t happen as  I moved into a content marketing position so it wasn’t as relevant. For the past 13 years, I’ve been working in the marketing field but it’s now more about martech and you need to know an amount of technology to be effective and efficient. A few years ago my manager saw Supermums at a conference and mentioned it to me as she knew I was looking to upskill, and continue further in a part-time role.  

Caitlin decided to upskill in Marketing Cloud with Supermums because…

Marketing Cloud wasn’t even a product when I first heard of Salesforce. I’ve got experience of other platforms like Marketo, Hubspot, IBM Watson but Salesforce is the King, or Queen of CRM and marketing automation platforms! I had no official job experience or qualifications in Salesforce and wanted to niche down with a marketing platform to fit my background. I looked into Supermums to explore what was out there. There are lots of free options like Trailhead and Focus on Force but Salesforce Marketing Cloud has less accessible materials and you certainly can’t get access to a live instance or learning how to build journeys unless you are in a role already that uses it – or by learning with Supermums. Structure and handholding worked best for me and were the other reasons that attracted me to this course. There were weekly webinars with homework tasks to keep you on track and accountable. There is also a strong built-in community made up of not just your cohort colleagues but also past Alumni who help support you with things like exam preparation. I liked that Supermums were using platforms such as Slack, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and bespoke systems so there were many ways to be supported, stay on track and not get left behind – and the trainer was there to support you too!  

Caitlin was able to launch her Salesforce career successfully because…

I didn’t want to work full-time in a Director role but there aren’t many part-time Marketing Directors! The level I was working at just wasn’t going to be flexible around my girls. I only wanted to work 20 – 25 hours a week and still be paid well so I knew that I had to go down the consulting route. Learning Marketing Cloud with Supermums was the driving force behind this.  

Caitlin has a successful and flexible career in Salesforce that offers her…  

I started my own company in October 2022. I’m providing strategic and creative marketing consulting to my previous employer and non-profits but having the Marketing Cloud cert and knowledge opens doors that just wouldn’t have otherwise been open to me. My unique skillset in a high demand product enables me to still remain part-time. I don’t need to take a staff job and I can continue to provide strategic consulting while I build up my Marketing Cloud clients. I regularly tell others about Supermums now. My previous marketing experience was helpful but some on my cohort were marketers who had no experience of email or automation marketing so were brand new to the technology. This didn’t matter as they were still successful. If you’re thinking about taking this course but don’t have any experience in either Salesforce or Marketing Cloud, it wouldn’t be impossible. The support and handholding from Supermums would get you through but experience in Salesforce or marketing would be helpful and make life easier.
