How do you progress from a Salesforce Administrator to a Salesforce Developer?
When you start as a Salesforce Administrator it’s great to have a progression plan with your employer that outlines your learning plan with roles and responsibilities that sets out how a promotion and salary increase can take place. As a Salesforce professional, you should always be learning, acquiring new skills, and developing your potential. There are different career tracts you could take and over the next four weeks, we are going to be sharing these pathways with you to help you plan out your journey to learning and earning more.

This week we look at how a Salesforce Administrator can progress to a Salesforce Developer and/or Technical Consultant if you have a desire to develop their technical competencies. A Salesforce Developer can develop their technical skill set to specialise in one or more of the five areas that we cover below:
Salesforce Administrator
Role: Building Requirements for Projects or Dealing with Salesforce Admin Requests on a Support Desk
Salary: £35k – £45k / USD $87k – $137k
Responsibilities: At this stage you are actively showing you can deliver on Salesforce administrative technical tasks on new or existing Salesforce instances of customers, under the management of a Salesforce consultant.
- Building out features and requirements required for new implementations according to requirements documentation.
- Diagnosing requirements submitted via a support desk and implementing solutions
- Managing cases with logging, prioritizing, and tracking of time and deliverables.
- Receiving 4/5 star feedback from users on Salesforce Use Cases and Onboarding.

- Management and implementation of integrated apps and systems.
Learning Pathway

Progression to Developer
Role: Ability to implement more technical solutions for customers and teams.
Salary: £50k – £84k / USD $99k – $166k
Responsibilities: At this stage, you will start to build up your technical skills and knowledge in one or more of the below areas. This might be dependent on your technical background and coding skills.
- Integration of systems using middleware and API’s
- APEX Programming
- Lightning Components
- External Web User Interfaces for Experience Cloud
- Advanced Data Migration using products e.g. Jitterbit or Talend
- DevOps
- Quality Testing
Learning Pathway
- Relevant Certifications for Products to be used eg. Service Cloud, Sales Cloud, Pardot, CRM Analytics
- Relevant Training and Certifications for Technical Skills e.g, Platform 2
Progression to Salesforce Technical Consultant
Role: Analysing and designing technical solutions for clients.
Salary: £60k – £84k / USD $127k – $175k
Responsibilities: You might decide that you want to lead on business analysis and solutions. Oversee the technical requirements on Salesforce projects and manage a team of Salesforce developers to execute them, rather than deliver them yourself. In this role, you will progress towards the role of a Salesforce Architect.
- Research and propose time and effort for technical deliverables.
- Document technical requirements and deliverables for execution.
- Management of developers to deliver successful solutions.
- Liaison with Salesforce consultants to support the delivery of projects.
- Management of quality testing and DevOps on projects.
