Does the thought of standing up in front of people fill you with dread? Learning how to conquer that fear can help to boost your confidence, reduce anxiety and enable you to grow as a person and in your role.

Even if you don’t make regular presentations in front of a group, public speaking is a useful skill to have from making a speech at a friend’s wedding to inspiring a group of volunteers at a charity event.

There are simple steps you can take to achieve this, try these 5 out next time you need to present:

  • Voice Control – Your voice is the most important tool you will use as a public speaker. One simple way to improve your voice is by learning to breathe fully and deeply from your diaphragm.
  • Body Language – This is your body’s way of communicating without using words. It’s the combination of facial expressions, gestures, and movements that convey what’s going on in your mind. Practice strong, confident body language to fuel your presentation.
  • Delivery – When it comes to public speaking, delivery is everything. Make sure you speak clearly, concisely and slowly or your message will get lost if the audience can’t easily follow what you say.
  • Practise – Been tasked with presenting something you don’t know anything about? Research the subject, write yourself notes, rehearse out loud to a friend or partner and believe inn yourself. If you deliver what you are saying confidently, others will feel confident about the information you are giving them.
  • Audience Relations – Good presenters are in tune with their audience and its more than just standing up and talking, it’s about engaging with them. Acknowledge your audience, grab their attention with a story or fact, make eye contact and find a friendly face to talk to. All of these things will help ease any nerves you have and make you feel more comfortable.
