The London’s Calling Team did a fantastic job under difficult circumstances bringing together a live online event that still provided the great learning opportunities we’ve come to expect from such events. Here our team share some of their take aways from the day:

Abigail:

What type of Salesforce Admin career is right for you?

Now more than ever we are being called upon to be Supermums! With my two year old son in the house and my husband also working from home it was challenging to focus in the whole day but i did manage to zone in on a few sessions and particularly enjoyed the ‘filling’ between sessions from the London’s calling team. It was great that they made the effort to maintain a sense of fun and to bring us some of the light hearted elements of community events as well as the learning sessions.

One of my favourite sessions and one that I feel is particularly pertinent to my fellow Supermums was from Christine Marshall and Nathaniel Sombu.

The duo compared life as a ‘Lone Wolf’ or ‘Solo Admin’ versus being part of a team of Admins. I spend a lot of time talking to Supermums who are about to embark on our Administrator course and some of the most common questions are about the types of roles available and what being an Admin really involves. It’s always a hard one to answer as having met a lot of Admins I know the roles can vary wildly depending on the type of organisation and team (or not) that surrounds you. We have placed our trainees as solo, part time admins for small charities, to Admin team members of global companies. It’s really about deciding what will suit your lifestyle and working style and personality.

The session gave a good insight into the ups and downs, benefits and disadvantages of both, Christine representing the ‘Lone wolf’ and Nathaniel the team Admin.

If you love making decisions, having full control and don’t mind a varied workload juggling many different challenges, being a solo admin might suit you. If you prefer to ‘deep dive’ into topics are really detail oriented and like to share your ideas, being part of a team might be for you. Throughout your career it’s great to give both a try – certainly as a new Admin being part of a team as it’s advantages, as you can learn from those around you. However if you like a challenge there’s nothing like being a solo admin to push to to tackle a steep learning curve.

I’ve enjoyed being part of the Supermums team and we all contribute to the management of our instance – that’s been great for me to build my skills and confidence. I also like variety in my job role so getting to do some admin while also having the opportunity to work on other things has been ideal for me. I really enjoyed this short video in the ‘Explore Career Development’ module on Trailhead. Vicki:

Baby #3 had decided that the trip to London for London’s Calling was not going to happen before the event became virtual, which is why I was so glad that I was able to catch up on the videos posted to YouTube. Salesforce community events are always full of such inspirational speakers sharing their expertise and top tips – I’ll be catching up on these for a while to come!
