Returning to work to achieve financial resilience is often the prime motivation for the women who have decided to launch their Salesforce Career with Supermums. In today’s rapidly evolving workforce, career breaks have become increasingly common, especially among women. Whether it’s to raise a family, care for a loved one, or pursue personal endeavors, taking time away from the workplace can lead to feelings of uncertainty and apprehension about returning to work. However, the good news is that with the right strategies and support, women returners can not only re-enter the workforce but also thrive in their careers and earn well.

Heather, the founder and CEO of Supermums, is a regular guest on podcast shows, sharing tips on how women returners can successfully relaunch their careers after being a stay at home mum. We have enjoyed collaborations with great allies including Investing in Women, iRelaunch, Love your Mom Life and Mom & ... Check out the episodes below.

The rise of women returners

According to research conducted by the Harvard Business Review, about 43% of highly qualified women leave the workforce at some point in their careers.

This phenomenon, often referred to as the “leaky pipeline,” highlights the significant number of talented women who take breaks from their careers. However, it’s essential to recognize that these career breaks are not indicative of a lack of ambition or capability but rather a reflection of the complex realities women face in balancing work and personal responsibilities.

Challenges faced by women returners

Returning to work after a career break can be daunting for several reasons. Confidence may have waned during the time away, skills might need updating to match current industry standards, and there may be concerns about finding suitable opportunities that accommodate other commitments. Additionally, women returning to work may face bias or outdated stereotypes about their abilities and dedication.

Strategies for women returners re-entering the workforce

  1. Assess Skills and Update Knowledge: Before diving back into the job search, take stock of your skills and identify areas that may need refreshing or upgrading. Consider enrolling in workshops, online courses, or certification programs to enhance your expertise and stay current with industry trends.
  2. Network: Networking remains one of the most effective ways to find job opportunities. Reach out to former colleagues, attend industry events, and join professional networking groups both online and offline. Networking can provide valuable insights, mentorship, and potential job leads.
  3. Seek Returnship Programs: Many companies now offer returnship programs designed specifically for individuals re-entering the workforce after a career break. These programs typically provide training, mentorship, and temporary employment, offering a supportive environment for women returners to regain their footing.
  4. Consider Flexible Work Arrangements: Explore opportunities for flexible work arrangements such as remote work, part-time roles, or job-sharing arrangements. Flexible arrangements can help women balance work and personal responsibilities more effectively, increasing their chances of long-term success in the workforce.

Supermums was founded on a mission to help mums secure a flexible well paid resilient career. The idea originated from our founder Heather Black when she found herself looking for a new career that would fit around starting a family without losing her financial footing. She stumbled across a career in Salesforce and realised other mothers should hear about the flexible well paid career opportunities in tech.
This led Heather to completely change career and retrain as a Salesforce Consultant were she was earning £5k ($10k) a month working part time remotely. She felt that if she could do it then others could do to and she launched Supermums to spread the word in Nov 2016. Fast forward to now she has helped over 1300 upskill and retrain across 10 different countries.
