What is it like working as a Marketing Cloud Consultant?
This weeks blog is all about what is it like being a Marketing Cloud Consultant as we shine the spotlight on Anton Minnion, Head of Technical Services at MarCloud.
Firstly, how would you describe Marcloud and what they do?
MarCloud is a leading marketing automation consultancy and Salesforce partner specialising in Pardot, Marketing Cloud and Salesforce CRM.
Our mission is to bring together the most passionate and competent Salesforce marketing professionals in the space to make businesses more competitive through the effective use of the entire Marketing Cloud and Salesforce CRM. We’re partners with Salesforce and Salesforce.org, currently have 4 Salesforce Marketing Champions in the team, are accredited ISO27001 certification and are trusted by some of the biggest companies in the world.
What was your background before you got involved in Marketing Cloud?
Before working with Marketing Cloud I worked as a marketing and sales technology consultant using Adobe and Oracle platforms. Before that, I worked at the University of Liverpool where I was part of a research group that looked into how data could be better used with AI.
Why did you decide to train-up in Marketing Cloud?
Marketing Cloud was always the most feature-rich and powerful platform in this particular technology arena. I felt I had reached a point where I could not push the Adobe and Oracle products any further so a natural progression was to move to Marketing Cloud for my next challenge.
Why did you decide to become a Marketing Cloud Consultant?
To answer this question, I also need to answer why I left academia to work in Marketing and Sales tech in general. I left academia as I was always more excited by the real-world application rather than the theoretical solution. As a Marketing Cloud consultant, I can see how technology transforms and empowers people to do better and more impactful work. That’s what gets me out of bed in the morning.
What type of projects do you work on?
I am a technologist at heart, so typically the projects I work on have significant technological challenges associated. These are likely integration or migration projects, but really anything where my experience and skills can make a difference.
What are the variety of things you do in your job?
This is a hard one to answer as each project is very different and the way we interact with our clients can change depending on their experience roles and level of expertise. Sometimes I will be fairly hands-on, doing development work, technical documentation and back-end configuration; at other times my role can be more advisory, consisting of advice on strategy, targeted training and promotion of solution to an internal audience.
What do you really enjoy about it?
The variety (see above), it can be a challenge to work on so many different things, but you are always learning and you are always helping and that’s what really drives me as a consultant.
Do you find you need Salesforce experience as well as Marketing Cloud?
If I were to accurately describe my job to someone unfamiliar with the platforms, I would say I am a Technology Consultant who works with Marketing and Sales teams. When functioning correctly, Sales and Marketing have a symbiotic relationship and therefore I can’t do my job without knowing both the Marketing platforms and the sales platforms. A reasonable knowledge of Sales cloud is, in my opinion, an essential component to being an effective Marketing Cloud Consultant.
What are you most proud of?
I am always most proud when we are able to look back at a particular project and compare what the client was doing before we started with the things they can achieve at the end. It always makes me proud of my team and the hard work they put in. It makes me proud that we can make a difference.
