Day in the life: Donna, Project Manager to Salesforce Analyst

Donna lives in California and is a Salesforce Analyst at Jade Global*. Through working on a previous contract, she discovered Salesforce and the flexibility and career opportunities it could give her.

Now in her role as a Salesforce Analyst, she wears both the Admin and Business Analyst hat each day to help customers and testing of solutions before they go into production.

Donna’s Story

“The reason I always vouch for the Supermums program is because the of support I got, the confidence that my mentor instilled in me and the kind of assignments I did prepared me very well”

What does the business do?
End to end intelligent digital service and solutions.  I work in the CRM division.

What is your job title?
Salesforce Analyst

Do you work flexibility?
Typically my role has been in the office with the flexibility to work from home when needed.  Covid-19 has moved my role remotely for now and may provide more opportunity for working flexibly in the future.

What do you do in a typical day?
I’m doing work as both an admin and business analyst.  On a typical day I am gathering requirement and building solutions.  My time is spent resolving customer issues, handling password resets and attending meetings.  I have responsibility for a lot of testing before we move into production.  Eight percent of my time is spent building solutions and attending meetings.  The rest of my time involves testing and solving customer issues.

What is the most challenging thing about your role?
Initial projects often become more complicated and time consuming.  At times I don’t have the knowledge needed to complete the project.  However, I view that as a challenge and take it on to learn more.  It can slow things down but I embrace the opportunity to expand my knowledge and ability to do more.

What is the best thing about your job?
The best thing about my job is getting to work on a variety of projects that I enjoy and find challenging.  I constantly have the opportunity to grow and am challenged to learn more.  My favourite thing to do is to create solutions.

What are your career ambitions?
My initial plan was to be a Salesforce Developer so I’m looking towards expanding my skills as a developer and then move on to become a solution architect.

How did you get into Salesforce?
I worked on a contract with a company that used Salesforce and I was impressed with the CRM team.  They were close and spent time together on the weekends at user group meetings.  That is where I learned that Salesforce careers allow for more flexibility and have many career options.  I was looking to find a role that required less travelling and more flexibility with location.

What’s your favourite thing about Salesforce?
Ease of use would be my favorite thing about Salesforce.  The ability to create solutions and build apps with point and click options instead of code is something I appreciate.

What certifications do you have and what are you working towards next?
Admin, App Builder, Service Cloud.  My next certification will by Sales Cloud.  I typically work on the certification that is most closely aligned with the projects I am working on at the moment.

What are your top tips for studying for certifications?
Take the Supermums course most aligned with the certification you want to pass and just enroll because you are going to be well prepared to pass.

What has been the biggest challenge in your Salesforce career so far?
As an admin you are expected to know or be an expert in things that you may not actually know.  People may assume you have the expertise because you are the go to Salesforce person at the organization.  For example, someone may want a solution that is custom and requires Apex programing.  My solution is to take on the challenge and ask questions in the Salesforce community.  People are always happy to provide answers and help.  I follow the advice of Richard Branson who says that if someone gives you something you don’t know how to do just take it and learn how to do it.  Thankfully I also still have my Supermums mentor and I can go to her and ask for her advice.

What advice would you give to people thinking about becoming a Salesforce developer?
Be sure to be grounded in the admin knowledge and foundation.  Once you have the basics then learning Apex and programming is an excellent next step.

Who are the best people to follow on social media?
David Liu
Salesforce Ben
Marc Benioff

Are there any groups / networks you would recommend joining (online or in real life!)
Your local user groups and especially the Supermums Facebook Group –

Is there anything else you would really like to tell people who are considering a career in Salesforce?
It’s a good place if you want to change careers.  The reason I always vouch for the Supermums program is because the support I got, the confidence that my mentor instilled in me and the kind of assignments I did prepared me very well.  When I started my job there was nothing I didn’t know how to do or to figure out.  I had been doing much of it in my Supermums program already.  My mentor had valuable experience and as she reviewed my course work she shared tips and tricks about how to do things faster and more effectively. I was able to do exceptionally well at my work.  Supermums is the best place to start and if you join the program you will be prepared to do well in your job search.  Also, do not give up if you struggle with the exam.  You may need to take it more than once and please don’t give up.
